It's pretty hard to come up with a new idea in this space but UBC has changed the game with this bike and has finally offered the enthusiast a truly new idea for a modern ride.
UBC GmbH based in Murr, Germany are presenting the coren, an outstanding urban bike. The frame of the coren is made of very high tensile strength T1000 carbon fibres which are otherwise used almost solely in Formula 1 monocoques. Innovative for the bicycle sector are the avant-‐garde shape, created by UBC designer Christian Zanzotti, and the design of the frame: super-‐slim top and down tubes lend the coren a unique visual lightness. The overall weight shows that this lightness is also a fact: 7,700 grams – more than acceptable for an urban bike. The coren is available from the end of 2012 directly from the manufacturers. Given UBC's heavy workload of motor racing projects, only a limited number of the high-‐tech bicycle will be available, either as Singlespeed, Pedelec or Fixie. The price is around €25,000 (incl. VAT).
Tolerances at Formula 1 level.
It takes 40 hours to make a coren by hand and almost everything that applies to traditional bicycle production goes by the board. The design and the size of the frame are based on a new approach: UBC fits the down tube, the top tube and the seat tube together on an adjustable frame gauge. The bike owes its unique appearance particularly to the connection of the top tube and the seat tube, to the delicate cross-‐ section and the faultless quality of the material and workmanship. To guarantee this, the UBC engineers monitor the materials and the workmanship on their own premises – in tolerance limits equivalent to the most stringent demands made of Formula 1, DTM, racing and high performance sports cars. UBC has made a name for itself throughout the world with the engineering and manufacture of high-‐quality carbon fibre components for customers such as Porsche, Bugattiand Audi.
From tailoring the carbon fibre layers through the manufacture of aluminium forms and curing the carbon parts to connecting the three sections of the frame – the entire manufacturing process is carried out on UBC premises. "The frame, like all UBC components, is manufactured in a clean room, in accordance with motor sport and premium vehicle construction standards," says Marco Noack, developer and designer at UBC. "Furthermore, we document everything. That includes details concerning the source, type of material, quality and employees," he continues.
Parts from well-‐known manufacturers.
The bicycle is completed with selected parts. For the delivery of components, UBC deliberately opted for partners whose philosophy and quality comes as close as possible to their own. The decision in favour of specialist German manufacturers such Tune, Schmolke, BOR, and Trickstuff has facilitated close collaborative partnerships. On the other hand, the carbon wheels from ENVE and the Gates carbon belt drive system come from the USA. Features such as the CNC milled fork ends with integrated belt tensioners, the rear light optionally integrated in the seat tube and the contact surfaces, saddle and handle bar tape, covered with the finest cowhide are testimony to the attention to detail.

Everything which makes the coren special seems to run counter to good sense: highest quality T1000 carbon fibres, processed to Formula 1 standards, designed by UBC designer Christian Zanzotti, who was able to work "independently without any design or marketing constraints" as the UBC CEO Ulf Bräutigam notes. The courage exhibited by those responsible to realise it was nevertheless recently rewarded with the ISPO Brand New Award 2012.
